Trump Throws Support Behind House Speaker

This was quite unexpected.

Former President Donald Trump has voiced support for House Speaker Mike Johnson amid calls from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for the Louisiana Republican’s removal from leadership.

In an interview with radio host John Fredericks, Trump emphasized the narrow majority in the House, indicating that Johnson cannot unilaterally make decisions. Trump praised Johnson’s past support on issues like NATO funding and his efforts to secure economic assistance for Ukraine.

While discussing divisions within the GOP, Trump underscored the importance of electing more supportive members to Congress, criticizing figures like Senator Mitt Romney. He highlighted the upcoming elections as crucial for the party’s future and the country’s trajectory.

Greene, a staunch Trump ally, demanded Johnson’s resignation over disagreements regarding foreign aid, particularly to Ukraine. Despite Johnson’s bipartisan efforts, including recent deals with President Biden, some conservatives have expressed dissatisfaction.

However, the political landscape differs from previous instances of leadership challenges, notably when House Speaker Kevin McCarthy faced similar pressures. With the November elections looming and a narrower majority, Republicans face internal tensions.

Reps. Thomas Massie and Paul Gosar have backed Greene’s push to remove Johnson, reflecting broader discontent among some House conservatives.
