Her win will escalate tensions.
On Friday, former President Trump suggested that escalating conflicts in the Middle East could lead to a third World War if he does not win the 2024 election.
Trump made these comments during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Netanyahu visited Florida after holding talks with President Biden and presumptive Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, D.C., earlier in the week. Netanyahu had addressed a joint session of Congress on Wednesday before his visit.
At the meeting, Trump criticized Harris, claiming she is less effective on Middle East issues and suggesting that the conflict between Israel and Gaza could broaden into a regional war if Harris takes office. Trump also warned of a potential third World War, stating that the current international situation is the closest to such a conflict since World War II, attributing this to what he views as ineffective leadership.
Trump’s comments come amid reported tensions between Harris and Netanyahu following their meeting. Harris stated after her discussions that she reassured Netanyahu of the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s security, particularly against threats from Iran and its allied militias. She also expressed concern about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, including civilian casualties, and called for an end to the conflict and the release of hostages.
Netanyahu reportedly reacted negatively to Harris’ remarks, emphasizing that the fight against the terrorist group must continue, even if it means prolonged conflict. He noted that Israel is still seeking a cease-fire and expressed hope that U.S.-Israel unity would help expedite the resolution, hoping Harris’ comments would not hinder this effort.
The meeting at Mar-a-Lago was the first direct interaction between Netanyahu and Trump since Trump left office in 2020. Their relationship had soured after Netanyahu congratulated Biden on his victory, leading Trump to publicly criticize him. Netanyahu is now working to mend relations and gain Trump’s support should he return to the White House. During the visit, Netanyahu presented Trump with a photo of a child held hostage in Gaza.
