Singer Refuses To Endorse Harris, Still Voting For Her

This makes no sense.

In a recent TikTok video, pop singer Chappell Roan announced her intention to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming November election, although she refrained from fully endorsing the Democratic presidential candidate. This declaration comes after Roan faced significant backlash from her liberal supporters following comments she made in an interview with The Guardian, where she expressed reluctance to endorse any candidate due to perceived issues on both sides of the political spectrum. Critics particularly took issue with her “both sides” remark, arguing it downplayed the stark differences between Republican and Democratic policies, especially regarding LGBTQ rights.

In her response to the criticism, Roan released another TikTok video clarifying her stance. She emphasized her refusal to be pressured into accepting the current political choices available to her. “I’m not going to settle for what the options that are in front of me, and you’re not going to make me feel bad for that,” she asserted. She also made a distinction between voting for a candidate and offering a full endorsement, stating her concerns about policies on both sides of the aisle. Specifically, she expressed frustrations with some of Harris’ positions related to transgender rights and voiced her concerns about the conflict in Gaza.

Roan, who identifies as a lesbian, has not detailed which specific transgender policies she disagrees with but previously criticized a White House statement opposing gender-affirming surgery for minors. Harris has a long history of supporting LGBTQ rights and is seen as one of the most pro-LGBTQ presidential candidates. However, some of Roan’s fans remain critical of her nuanced stance, especially given the Democratic platform’s commitment to opposing bans on gender-affirming healthcare and advocating for anti-discrimination laws.

The singer’s political engagement extends beyond her voting preferences. Earlier this year, she declined an invitation to perform at the White House during Pride Month, citing a lack of alignment with the administration’s policies on equality and justice. In her conversations about her rapid rise to fame, Roan has been candid about the pressures and challenges of public life, including her emotional responses shared on social media.

Roan concluded her recent TikTok by encouraging her followers to vote for the candidates they believe align best with their values, while expressing her hope that they will remain discerning in their choices. As discussions around her political statements continue, some of her fans are beginning to reassess their reactions, as highlighted by a pop culture account that issued an apology for its previous criticism of her position on endorsements.
