Renowned Lawyer Quits Democratic Party Over DNC Controversy

He’s walking away.

Alan Dershowitz, a prominent attorney, has announced his departure from the Democratic Party, citing what he views as an increase in anti-Israel and anti-Jewish sentiment within the party. Dershowitz highlighted the recent Democratic National Convention (DNC) as a pivotal factor in his decision, calling it the most “anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, anti-Zionist” convention he has ever witnessed. In a discussion with radio host Zev Brenner, he expressed his frustration with the presence of anti-Israel speakers and protesters at the event.

Dershowitz has officially renounced his affiliation with the Democratic Party and has registered as an Independent. He has yet to reveal his choice for the upcoming presidential election, stating that his vote will hinge on the candidates’ stances on critical issues, especially those concerning Israel and its relationship with Iran. He stressed his hope that the current administration will continue its support for Israel.

Dershowitz’s decision was influenced by a series of events that contributed to his dissatisfaction. Notably, he was disheartened by Vice President Kamala Harris’ absence during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress, and the widespread boycott of Netanyahu’s address by many Democrats. However, the decisive factor for him was the convention in Chicago, which he felt displayed overt hostility towards Israel.

He also took issue with several prominent Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Rev. Al Sharpton, criticizing their views on Israel. Dershowitz was further disturbed by anti-Israel protesters outside the convention who were advocating for the destruction of Israel, which intensified his disillusionment with the party.

The recent October 7 attack on Israel has further exacerbated internal divisions within the Democratic Party, with some members reluctant to condemn groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Many Democrats have called for Israel to show restraint while not holding these groups to the same standard. This growing discord over the party’s stance on Israel’s security and foreign policy has solidified Dershowitz’s decision to sever his ties with the Democratic Party.
