They are planning on moving out of the country.
A recent poll conducted by StorageUnits.com reveals that a notable portion of Americans may consider relocating if the presidential candidate they oppose wins in 2024. The survey, which included 1,968 respondents who support either former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris, was conducted on July 22, shortly after President Joe Biden ended his presidential campaign and endorsed Harris.
According to the findings, 15% of respondents said they would consider moving out of their state or the country if their preferred candidate does not win. Among Harris supporters, 19% are contemplating relocation, compared to 12% of Trump supporters. Harris supporters who are thinking about moving often cite concerns such as increased social inequality and a potential federal abortion ban. On the other hand, Trump supporters are primarily worried about higher living costs and taxes under a Harris administration.
The survey also detailed preferred destinations for relocation. Harris supporters considering leaving the U.S. would most likely move to Canada, with some preferring the United Kingdom or Mexico. Trump supporters, if Harris wins, also favor Canada, the United Kingdom, and Mexico as potential new homes. Within the U.S., Trump supporters are considering states like Florida, California, and Texas, while Harris supporters are looking at New Jersey, California, and New York.
James Heartquist, a real estate expert, commented on the survey’s implications, noting that the increasing political polarization in the U.S. is driving some individuals to seek living environments that better match their political beliefs. He predicts that this trend could significantly affect the real estate market, leading to higher property demand in politically favorable areas and potentially impacting housing prices. The survey results reflect broader political divisions, with both Trump and Harris having mixed favorability ratings among Americans.
