On Sunday, Senator JD Vance, who is running alongside former President Donald Trump, retracted earlier comments he made in August about Trump’s stance on a federal abortion ban. Vance had previously suggested that Trump would veto such a ban if it reached his desk. However, Vance clarified his position on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” acknowledging that he had not discussed the issue with Trump directly.
Trump had previously addressed this topic during a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, stating that he had not talked to Vance about how he would handle a federal abortion ban. Trump emphasized that Vance’s comments did not represent his own views and that he had not authorized Vance to speak on his behalf regarding this matter.
During the debate, Trump also criticized Harris’s proposal to restore federal abortion protections, suggesting that it would be impossible for her to succeed in Congress due to the lack of support. He expressed skepticism about any significant legislative changes regarding abortion without a substantial shift in Senate rules or a Republican supermajority.
Echoing Trump’s sentiment, Vance described the question of a federal abortion ban as largely theoretical, arguing that such legislation would face significant obstacles in the Senate. He underscored that Trump has consistently expressed opposition to a national abortion ban, preferring instead that abortion policies be determined at the state level.
