GOP Lawmaker Sounds Alarm On ‘Dangerous’ California Agenda

He is issuing a stark warning.

In recent statements to Fox News Digital, a Republican state senator from Maine, Trey Stewart, expressed concerns about what he perceives as a progressive and “radical” agenda gaining traction in the state. According to Stewart, Democrats in Maine are adopting policies reminiscent of California, leading to a shift that he believes is detrimental to the state’s well-being.

One of the key points raised by Stewart is the removal of former President Trump from the ballot in Maine, a decision he views as an extreme measure that undermines the democratic process. In response to Democratic Governor Janet Mills, Stewart, along with GOP State Rep. Billy Bob Faulkingham, issued a warning about Democrats embracing a “California agenda.” They pointed to various instances where they argue that the Democratic-led initiatives do not align with the preferences of the majority of Maine voters.

Stewart highlighted concerns about energy policies, accusing Democrats of prioritizing special interest groups, particularly in the solar and wind lobby, at the expense of Maine ratepayers. He pointed to the resulting high electricity prices in the state and criticized proposals such as bans on plastics and an ambitious electric vehicle mandate.

Another area of contention mentioned by Stewart is the alleged attack on parental rights in Maine. He specifically referred to a bill, LD 1735, which Republicans claim would have allowed non-parental custodians to make decisions about a child’s sex change procedures without parental consent. Despite the bill being killed in committee, Stewart emphasized the ongoing need for vigilance on such matters.

Stewart also criticized the decision by the Democratic Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, to bar Trump from running for president in Maine, characterizing it as out of touch with the majority of Mainers and an inappropriate response to political differences.

In summary, Stewart contends that Maine, traditionally seen as a purple state, is veering towards a more liberal agenda under Democratic leadership. He argues that these policies are not in line with the preferences of the state’s residents and could have negative consequences for both Maine and the broader country. With the upcoming November elections, Stewart emphasizes the importance of common sense prevailing to address what he sees as an overly progressive trajectory for the state.
