Democrats Pledge Full Support Despite Debate Blunder

They are supporting a sinking ship.

Following President Joe Biden’s disappointing debate performance, there was noticeable concern among congressional Democrats, although public calls for him to withdraw from the presidential race were notably absent. Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.), representing a competitive district, described the debate as “terrible,” criticizing Biden’s communication and highlighting Trump’s habitual falsehoods. However, when questioned about Biden stepping aside, Craig emphasized her focus on local district issues, reflecting a reluctance among Democrats to publicly challenge Biden’s candidacy.

Privately, many Democrats, including lawmakers, expressed apprehension over Biden’s performance. Despite this, they maintained a unified front in public, downplaying the debate’s impact as a singular event in the broader campaign. Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.), a key figure in Biden’s 2020 primary victory, acknowledged Biden’s shortcomings but stressed that on substantive issues, Biden’s approach remained solid and unchanged.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) acknowledged Biden’s initial struggles during the debate but noted his recovery on substantive issues as the event progressed. In response to internal anxieties, the Biden campaign swiftly circulated supportive messaging among Democrats, featuring endorsements from prominent figures like Vice President Kamala Harris and governors Gavin Newsom and Josh Shapiro, aimed at reassuring nervous party members.

Democratic lawmakers sought to redirect attention towards what they termed a “style over substance” narrative regarding Biden’s performance. Despite internal critiques regarding missed opportunities and Biden’s perceived over-preparation, there was a prevailing sentiment against prematurely abandoning Biden’s candidacy. Instead, Democrats emphasized the long road ahead to the November election and Biden’s ability to connect with voters on critical issues.

In a show of support, Biden appeared reinvigorated at a subsequent rally in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he candidly addressed his debate performance amidst an energized audience. This event underscored a mixed but resilient Democratic response, acknowledging concerns while reaffirming confidence in Biden’s capacity to lead. Overall, while Biden’s debate missteps sparked internal debate and unease among Democrats, the party largely maintained solidarity in backing his candidacy, viewing the incident as a transient setback rather than a definitive judgment on his presidential qualifications.
