He’s trying to be different.
Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia hinted at the possibility of launching a third-party presidential bid during an appearance at the City Club of Cleveland on Thursday. Although Manchin danced around the topic of his 2024 intentions, he endorsed potential running mates, including Republican senators Mitt Romney of Utah and Rob Portman of Ohio.
While at the event, Manchin offered pointed criticisms of President Joe Biden, indicating a potential rift within the Democratic Party. Despite repeatedly dodging questions about his presidential aspirations, Manchin admitted to reporters that a third-party run remains a possibility, with a decision expected around Super Tuesday in March.
The senator’s daughter has founded a group called Americans Together, suggesting preparations for a potential campaign. Manchin’s recent appearances, including one scheduled in Columbus, Ohio, indicate a growing interest in national politics.
Manchin’s remarks drew a bipartisan audience, with attendees ranging from former Republican Party officials to Democratic leaders. During his speech, Manchin took swipes at Biden’s policies, particularly regarding border security, while also making light of Biden’s age compared to his own.
In terms of potential running mates, Manchin has previously joked about teaming up with Romney, with whom he shares a reputation for centrism in the Senate. While the senator has not explicitly declared his candidacy, his interactions and comments suggest a growing interest in pursuing national office outside of traditional party lines.
