Democrat Found Guilty For 16 Corruption Charges

He’s facing decades in prison.

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, has been convicted on all 16 counts of corruption-related charges, including bribery, wire fraud, extortion, and obstruction of justice. The jury’s decision marks a significant legal setback for Menendez, who was also found guilty of acting as a foreign agent for Egypt.

Alongside Menendez, Wael Hana, 40, and Fred Daibes, 66, both from Edgewater, New Jersey, were convicted on various charges. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams described the case as exposing “shocking levels of corruption” and criticized the use of public office for personal gain. Williams highlighted the large bribes, including cash, gold, and a Mercedes-Benz, that were part of the scheme. He emphasized the importance of combating corruption to maintain public trust and uphold the rule of law.

Menendez, who intends to appeal the verdict, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He asserted his patriotism and denied being a foreign agent, expressing his belief in his innocence and commitment to his constituents. The sentencing for Menendez and his co-defendants is scheduled for October 29.

The trial has prompted calls for Menendez’s resignation from several Democratic leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin. Both officials have urged Menendez to step down for the good of his constituents and the Senate.

Despite the verdict, Menendez has announced his intention to run for reelection as an “independent Democrat,” asserting his continued commitment to public service and confidence in his eventual exoneration.
