He is revealing all.
In his first interview since stepping out of the presidential race, President Joe Biden explained to CBS News that his decision was driven by the need to prevent former President Donald Trump’s reelection and to avoid diverting focus from other Democratic campaigns. Biden described himself as a “transition president” and acknowledged the concerns from Democratic colleagues in Congress who worried his candidacy could negatively impact their own electoral chances.
Speaking from his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Biden admitted that the race was extremely tight according to polls but expressed concerns about becoming a distraction within the Democratic campaign. He felt that his continued presence in the race could overshadow broader Democratic objectives and lead to negative consequences for his colleagues in the House and Senate.
Biden revealed that discussions with party members significantly influenced his decision. After his initial debate with Trump, notable Democrats such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer privately urged him to withdraw from the race, although Pelosi later denied having such discussions. She did, however, acknowledge that Biden’s campaign was struggling and that she had advised him to avoid the debate, fearing it would turn chaotic.
Biden’s decision was also deeply personal, shaped by his enduring commitment to American democracy and the influence of his late son, Beau Biden. He shared that he often reflects on what Beau would advise when facing tough decisions. Biden emphasized his belief in the critical importance of defeating Trump and prioritized the country’s needs over personal ambitions.
On July 24, shortly after announcing his withdrawal, Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office, underscoring that his decision was motivated by a commitment to the nation’s welfare rather than personal gain.
