Marianne Williamson made the decision to end her 2024 bid for the Democratic presidential nomination on Wednesday, citing disappointing results in both the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries.
In a heartfelt video shared on YouTube, Williamson drew inspiration from the beauty of sunsets to convey her feelings about this conclusion. “Even though it’s time to suspend my campaign for the presidency,” she said, “I want to embrace the beauty of this moment, and I want all of you who supported me throughout this journey to do the same.”
Her presidential aspirations began in March 2023, long before President Joe Biden announced his re-election plans. At her campaign kickoff event in Washington’s Union Station, Williamson emphasized the importance of fostering a vision of justice and love, declaring her candidacy for the nation’s highest office.
Despite lacking prior elected experience, Williamson had also pursued the presidency in 2020, exiting the race just before the primaries commenced.
Leading up to the New Hampshire primary, Williamson expressed concerns about the potential outcome of the 2024 general election, drawing parallels to the contentious 2016 race. She criticized the prevailing Democratic narrative, advocating for a more nuanced approach that prioritized addressing socioeconomic inequality.
Throughout her campaign, Williamson positioned herself as a progressive candidate, echoing some of Senator Bernie Sanders’ key platforms from the 2016 election. Her campaign website underscored the urgent need to address economic disparities and called for action on pressing issues like police brutality, climate change, and fossil fuel dependency.
While Williamson’s departure from the presidential race marks the end of her formal campaign, her advocacy has shed light on crucial societal issues and offered a distinct voice within the Democratic Party.
