Vice President Kamala Harris achieved a record-breaking fundraising total of $361 million in August, according to her campaign’s announcement on Friday. This figure represents the largest fundraising amount reported for the 2024 election cycle.
Harris’s impressive fundraising outpaced the $130 million raised by Donald Trump’s campaign last month, as reported earlier this week. Since taking over as the Democratic presidential nominee on July 21, following President Biden’s decision to end his re-election bid and endorse her, Harris has generated over $615 million in donations. Her campaign highlighted August’s figures as the highest grassroots fundraising total ever recorded in presidential history.
The campaign also reported a substantial $404 million in cash reserves as of the end of August, exceeding the $295 million reported by Trump’s campaign. This marks a significant increase from the $310 million raised by the Democratic ticket in July. Meanwhile, Trump’s August fundraising was slightly down from the $138.7 million collected in July.
Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Harris’s campaign manager, praised the fundraising surge, stating that Harris’s campaign has attracted a broad and enthusiastic coalition. Rodriguez emphasized that every dollar raised will be used strategically to engage voters crucial to winning the election. In contrast, Trump’s team has also highlighted their financial resources, asserting that their funds are sufficient to drive their campaign efforts.
Earlier this year, the Biden campaign and the Democratic National Committee led in fundraising compared to Trump and the Republican National Committee. However, Trump and the RNC surpassed Biden’s team by $331 million to $264 million for the second quarter of 2024. Despite a brief fundraising boost for Biden after a challenging debate performance, donor support quickly waned, leading to a slowdown in contributions by early July.
