RFK Jr. Shakes Up 2024 Election

He’s making an unexpected move.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is reportedly planning to end his independent presidential campaign and endorse former President Donald Trump, according to two sources familiar with the situation. While discussions are still ongoing, clarity about the decision is expected by the end of the week. There are plans for a joint appearance by Kennedy and Trump, with Kennedy scheduled to give a speech in Phoenix on Friday, coinciding with an event Trump will hold in nearby Glendale.

Kennedy’s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, mentioned earlier this week that the campaign is deliberating between continuing their run or withdrawing to support Trump. Shanahan noted that staying in the race could lead to a potential Harris-Walz administration, whereas joining Trump might be a strategic move. Efforts to persuade Kennedy to endorse Trump have been led by Donald Trump Jr., former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, and wealthy donor Omeed Malik, who have been working behind the scenes to facilitate this transition.

In response to the speculation, Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, confirmed that there has been significant communication between Kennedy and Trump’s campaign. Vance emphasized that Trump’s administration might appeal to Democrats who feel alienated by the current party leadership. Trump has expressed openness to having Kennedy join his administration, should he win, though he did not commit to offering a Cabinet position in exchange for Kennedy’s endorsement.

Criticism of Kennedy’s potential endorsement has been swift. Mary Beth Cahill, a senior adviser to the Democratic National Committee, accused Kennedy of aligning himself with MAGA forces and attempting to stay relevant by joining Trump. Additionally, Kennedy’s campaign has faced several challenges, including personal allegations and financial difficulties. His public visibility has decreased, and his campaign is reportedly in debt, with difficulties in securing ballot access in some states.

Despite these setbacks, Kennedy’s campaign continues to face internal and external pressures, with recent financial disclosures revealing substantial debt and refund issues for Shanahan. The campaign’s struggles with ballot access, including a recent disqualification in New York due to residency issues, further complicate the situation.
