Social Media Erupts Over Harris’ Bold Declaration

A 2017 video of Vice President Kamala Harris has resurfaced, prompting criticism from some conservatives who have accused her of being excessively radical. In the clip from Recode’s Code Conference, Harris urged attendees to be “woke,” a term that was gaining popularity at the time for its association with social justice issues. She stressed the importance of staying engaged and aware of social justice matters, even as she acknowledged that some people might argue about who is the “wokest.”

During the same conference, Harris criticized the Trump administration’s policies on immigration and drug enforcement. She expressed frustration over the treatment of refugees and condemned the revival of aggressive drug policies, particularly targeting marijuana use. Her comments reflected a broader critique of the administration’s approach to these issues.

The term “woke” had gained mainstream attention in 2017, with dictionaries like Oxford and Merriam-Webster adding it to their lexicons to denote awareness of social justice. Over time, however, the term has been used more broadly and often derisively in political discourse, especially by critics who view it as emblematic of left-wing agendas.

The resurfacing of the video has led to significant backlash, with some commentators, including conservative author James Lindsay, labeling Harris as a “Communist functionary.” This controversy comes as President Biden recently withdrew from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Harris as his successor. Harris officially secured the Democratic nomination for the 2024 election, receiving a majority of votes from convention delegates.

The criticism surrounding the video highlights ongoing debates about the implications of “woke” culture and its place in contemporary politics. Despite the backlash, Harris’s campaign has not yet responded to the renewed criticism prompted by the resurfaced clip.
