He is trying to provoke Trump.
The day after former President Donald Trump inaccurately claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris only recently identified as Black, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer defended Harris, calling her “a strong Black woman” and suggesting that Trump is intimidated by the idea of debating her. Schumer criticized Trump for making outrageous statements as his poll numbers decline, arguing that his increasing irrationality reflects his fear of facing Harris in a debate.
Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic presidential nominee, has echoed this sentiment on the campaign trail, accusing Trump of avoiding debates. Trump had initially agreed to a debate with President Joe Biden, scheduled for September 10, but after Biden withdrew and Harris entered the race, Trump criticized the debate host and preferred a different platform. Trump’s disparaging comments also targeted Schumer, incorrectly labeling him as a “Palestinian” and associating him with Hamas, which has been condemned as offensive and false.
Democrats have also criticized Ohio Senator JD Vance for derogatory comments made about Harris and other Democratic figures. Schumer responded by denouncing the increasingly extreme rhetoric from Republicans, suggesting that their behavior undermines their electoral chances. He emphasized the importance of contrasting this negativity with a positive message about what Democrats aim to achieve.
Schumer also addressed concerns about Harris’s upcoming choice of a vice presidential running mate, expressing confidence in her ability to make the best selection. He dismissed suggestions that the pick might exacerbate internal party divisions, instead focusing on the need for a strong candidate who can effectively take over if necessary.
Despite recent political upheavals, including a chaotic debate and attempted assassination of Trump, Schumer believes there is growing enthusiasm for Harris’s candidacy. He noted that Democrats and independents are excited about the prospect of Harris leading the ticket and are relieved that the Democratic Party appears united and focused on key issues, contrasting with the turmoil surrounding Trump and his allies.
