Independent Candidate Declares Showdown With Trump

He believes he has a better chance with Biden gone.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declared that the 2024 presidential race is essentially a “two-man race,” claiming that he is the only contender who can defeat Donald Trump following President Biden’s surprising exit from the campaign. At a press conference held at his family’s historic estate in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, Kennedy both acknowledged Biden’s long career in public service and criticized Democratic leaders for concealing his mental decline.

Kennedy, who departed from the Democratic Party after being blocked from challenging Biden in the primaries, accused the Democratic National Committee (DNC) of deliberately hiding Biden’s health issues from the public. He alleged that the DNC manipulated the nomination process to prevent any serious competition that could reveal Biden’s shortcomings.

Continuing his campaign as an independent, Kennedy has garnered significant support in some polls, advocating against “corporate capture,” addressing affordability issues, and opposing ongoing military engagements. He criticized former President Trump for his populist appeal, describing it as similar to the DNC’s attempt to obscure its true objectives, which he argues serve corporate interests rather than the American people. Kennedy also expressed skepticism about Kamala Harris, suggesting that her potential nomination as the Democratic candidate is a strategic move to maintain financial support rather than a genuine choice for leadership.

Kennedy mentioned that he would be open to accepting the Democratic nomination if offered, stating he would consider discussions with party leaders. He believes he is the only candidate capable of defeating Trump, although he noted that he would be in a similar position to other candidates like Dean Phillips or Marianne Williamson, who have been sidelined by the current party dynamics. Despite these challenges, Kennedy remains confident in his independent run and sees himself as the strongest contender in what he describes as a two-person race.
