His request is not unreasonable.
Former President Donald Trump has suggested that Fox News should host the next presidential debate, especially after President Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race. Trump expressed his preference for Fox News over ABC, criticizing the latter’s coverage and highlighting its association with George Stephanopoulos. Trump made this statement on Truth Social, noting that Biden’s departure from the race means the debate should be moved to a network he views as less biased.
Biden’s exit from the presidential race followed significant pressure from Democratic leaders who argued that his age and recent debate performance made him less viable as a candidate. In his resignation letter posted on X, Biden emphasized that while it had been his intention to seek re-election, stepping down was in the best interest of his party and the country. He endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his preferred successor, acknowledging her as a key decision in his administration.
With Biden out, the debate schedule is now in flux. The first debate in June was moderated by CNN, and ABC was set to host the second debate in September. Trump is now advocating for Fox News to take over the hosting duties, although it remains uncertain who will be his debate opponent until the Democratic National Convention officially selects a nominee.
Trump’s campaign had previously agreed to two debates with Fox News: one for the presidency on October 2 and another for the vice presidency, with the date yet to be set. Following Biden’s announcement, Trump criticized the former president’s performance and suggested that Harris would be an easier opponent. He also questioned whether the Republican Party should be compensated for the costs incurred while preparing to debate Biden, whom he claimed was unfit for office from the start.
